Q. Why choosing a licensed, bonded and fully insured roofing contractor is important to you and your home.
A. Hiring a well-established, licensed, bonded and “fully insured” contractor will financially protect possibly your largest investment (your home) against accidental injury or damage claims. You also greatly improve your chances in receiving a high level of responsible and professional service.
Q. Understanding the importance of an appropriate attic ventilation system.
A. A proper ventilation roof system is very important. There must be the appropriate amount of air flow entering the attic through eaves or soffits (in-flow) and an appropriate and equal amount leaving the attic out the roof vents (out-flow). Creating an efficient ventilation system will significantly reduce attic heat in the Summer and moisture in the Winter.
Q. PVC/TPO single ply membranes versus Built-up/Tar applications
A. Single-Ply PVC/TPO membranes are a newer and better performing flat roof material. Built-up, tar and torch-down applications will last about half the life of a Single-ply PVC and TPO membranes and the application is much safer and cleaner.
Q. Cedar shake versus asphalt shingles
A. Asphalt roof shingles are most of the roofing market due to fire ratings, cost and very low maintenance. Though a treated high-quality cedar shake is available on the market, the labor and material costs are significantly higher and still remains a fire hazard.
Q. The effects of the Northwest Region’s weather on your roof.
A. The weather in the Northwest fluctuates from one extreme to the other (hot to cold, cold to hot). This causes expansion and retraction. Over time, this will take a toll on roof shingles. A shingle in the northwest may not last as long as some other parts of the country.
Q. Disadvantages of a recover/overlay.
A. It’s always better to spend the additional costs to tear-off an existing roof. You need to be able to inspect the roof deck for dry rot or de-lamination. Also going over existing shingles adds additional weight to the truss system and creates more moisture.
Q. Did you realize a tax credit is available of certain roofing products?
A. There are products now available on the market that are “green certified” and most of the time there is a tax credit available.
